Spring ALWAYS Follows Winter. But Winters Are For Suckas!

Every year, without fail, the seasons change. Summer, fall, after winter then comes spring. Spring ALWAYS follows winter. This pattern isn’t going to change.

There are certain things in life that one man cannot change. How much control do you have over the changing of the seasons? Absolutely none. You can’t change the seasons. You’re just a spectator merely watching as things happen around you.

You can either be The Enthused Participant, The Punching Bag or the ACTIVE-DAD. Either way, it’s going to happen.

“Better is not something you wish; It’s something you become.”

Ask An Active-Dad: Expert Edition with Barri Griffiths (WWE Wrestling Superstar Mason Ryan)

As we all know, ACTIVE-DADs come in all shapes and sizes. There is no “Perfect” starting point because the goal is to start where you are, RIGHT NOW, and aim to continuously improve.

If that means going from completely sedentary to joining the One Activity, One Day A Week Challenge (How Low Has Complacency Set Your Bar?), then YOU’RE WINING! The secret; The more you keep going, the more you keep WINNING. Along the way, you can adjust and discover new approaches.

But first thing’s first.

major time on major things

I’ve said it before in Health Is A Wealth Multiplier, but I’ll say it again, if you’ve figured out how to build wealth, you already have the tools  to be an ACTIVE-DAD and lead a healthy life  prioritizing what brings you the most value. On your journey, you are likely to share the road with others traveling in the same direction, albeit, often at different speeds and in different vehicles

I am stoked to introduce you to Barri Griffiths. He hosts an extremely successful and alluring podcast appropriately titled Wrestling With Real Estate, to which I was fortunate enough to grace an episode of. Prior to the podcast episode, I met Barri traveling down a similar road to financial independence.

Ask An Active-Dad: Expert Edition with Steve Roy (Fit Dad Nation)

As men, we are drawn to others we can relate to, that have been where we’ve been or possibly even look like us. That has been my experience. We say things like “That’s my dude” or “He’s my people”. A common thread is shared. A person will resonate even more if they are achieving some of the goals you have your sights on. You may even realize that you’ve stumbled upon the “Secret to Success” when a common theme is shared enough times, by a multitude of people who are totally different.

The stories from Everyday Dads can be extremely motivating and practical in approach, but nothing beats access to Experts. A heavy dose of “Bro-talk” from the untrained and unstudied can also lead you astray, spinning your wheels with no results. This could do a number on your motivation and have you right back on the couch proclaiming NOTHING WORKS! The right expert can get you back right! Or just give you the extra UMPH that you need.

I coach dads for a living full-time as well as train several people in-person. Most of what I do consists of leading groups, organizing and running fitness challenges, and creating content for my paid members.

Ask An Active-Dad: Expert Edition with Michael Ashford (Fit Dad Fitness)

Up until this point, Ask An Active-Dad has featured both Everyday Dads and Experts that are super motivating, and who I know on a personal level or have at least met at an event (Frank Clayton, Jr.). We all know dads out there living and breathing our mantra of “Prioritizing Physical Activity”. It’s refreshing and re-energizing to encounter them doing their thing.

Coronavirus News Fatigue is real, and while we may be “over” hearing about it, there are some lasting impacts. One reality is the inability to attend big conferences and network, face-to-face, like we once did. At least not for a little while longer. So, we turn to social media. That’s exactly what I did.

I am a certified personal trainer and the founder of Fit Dad Fitness, where I help equip fathers to live active, involved, healthy lives with their children, using fitness as the foundation to keeping families strong and together.

Shed Some Light | Mental Health Awareness Month

Remember when you could leave the house in the morning and go to work? Remember when you could drop your kids off at your trusted day care center, kiss them, hug them and wave bye? Remember when you could focus on, I mean REALLY focus, on work assignments?

The stress of physical isolation. The unintended consequences—think “cabin fever”—from nonstop interaction with immediate family members comes at a cost. There comes a time to break, before YOU break!

An Kaiser Family Foundation Tracking Poll conducted March 25-30, 2020, found that 47% of those sheltering in place reported negative mental health effects resulting from worry or stress related to coronavirus.

During National Mental Health Awareness Month listen to the wise words of modern-day philosopher Marshawn Lynch and “Take Care of Y’all Mentals.”

Policy of Honesty

I totally got caught up in the stress induced frenzy surrounding the shelter in place orders of my state. To be fair, like you, the stress was more tied to the uncertainty of what a shelter in place order meant to obtaining everyday provisions. In the beginning, establishments were slowly closing and it was unclear which ones would remain open. For a family of four, that’s stressful!

As men, we have a tendency to disregard the mental aspect of health and wellness. As dads, we are wired to put everyone else’s needs above ours, grin and bear it.

The stress may even drive us to unhealthy behaviors like drinking alcohol excessively, seeking to relax and relieve some stress. I count myself among those coping with stress in a unhealthy manner. There’s a better way.

Take A Mental Health Day

How do you take a Mental Health Day, when you’re stuck at home? Well, it may be less of a whole day, and more of a break in your day.

Break Out! But do it in a considerate way. Consider your wife’s schedule. Consider your child(ren)’s schedule. Work out your “Break Out” session ahead of time. Then—this is absolutely essential—be sure to extend the same time to you wife. Check out “How To Gain Support From Your Significant Other.”

If you can’t go very far, bring the break to you. I use resistance bands. Resistance bands are portable, versatile, lightweight and effective. If you have something firm to attach the band to, you can really maximize the variety of movements to get your muscles pumping. If you feel like stress eating or stress drinking, occupy your mind by moving your body!

Get Active

Prioritizing Physical Activity has never been more important for your mental health, than it is right now. You no longer have work to rely on for your adult interactions. No more water cooler talks with your co-workers. Besides, there’s no basketball, baseball or hockey to talk about.

There is no separation of work stress at work and home stress at home—being able to escape the home stress (at least momentarily) by going to work. Unhealthy behaviors are around every corner. Stress eating. Stress drinking. You have to take care of yourself, Dad.

For the sake of a clear head, to make clear professional work decisions and to give your family your best while you are around them, take a break, get your heart rate up, PRIORITIZE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.

Pass On An Inheritance of Heart Health | World Hypertension Day

My family history has a history of hypertension. Because of this, I’m at a higher risk for hypertension.  May 2020 is National Stroke Awareness Month (#StrokeMonth). Interestingly enough, World Hypertension Day (#WorldHypertensionDay) is on May 17.

This is the world asking you if you know where you stand. Do you have Hypertension?

What Is Hypertension?

Just like most medical terms, there is usually a common, more relatable term to describe it.

Poop = Feces

Microorganisms = Germs

Hypertension is the term used to describe High Blood Pressure.

Family Day EVERYDAY | International Day of Families

You’ve been stuck in your home with your family. It’s like an indefinite family vacation. The walls start closing in on you. Little annoyances start to run you up the wall. Why is EVERYONE so noisy!?!?

Your kids are loud, messy kids and act like they don’t know how to pick up behind themselves. Your teething one year old is whiny, clingy, and eating everything in sight, the floor included. Your three-year-old who fancies herself a comedian, makes her little brother cry, then cries because you try to correct her behavior. Your wife doesn’t seem to get that Work-From-Home, literally means, WORK. From. Home.

This doesn’t sound so appealing, right? Man do I miss it!

My current situation has taken me away from “all the fun” for 45 days. So the first two anecdotes (and SO much more) are from the glue that holds our family together, my wife of course. That last one about Work-From-Home was from me (she doesn’t doesn’t read these anyways 😉).

Ask An Active-Dad: Everyday Dad Edition with Bernardy Darguin (Peloton Showroom Manager)

Since 2013, my wife and I have lived in four different states. From Florida, to Arizona, to California, to presently Maryland. That may sound a little excessive to some, but it’s not without reason. Nevertheless, our tendency to move around has unexpectedly honed one very important skill, the ability to connect with good people. Of course, my wife oversees the family’s Communication Department, because if it were up to me, we would only know work colleagues (she would be bored with us talking “Shop”) and people from the local real estate investor meetups (again, boring to her). It’s a big deal to me when dads connect.

I think the key for us is being open to getting out there and just moving!

Bernardy Darguin

As a family of four, 99% of all social gatherings must involve kids and/or be kid friendly. So when my wife mentioned someone invited our family over for a get-together, I was ready and willing. I was happy to meet Bernardy and his family of six (four kids, him and his wife) and enjoyed spending time with them. Not to mentioned they opened up their home! Bernardy not only has a good handle on Prioritizing Physical Activity, he is well vested in it. As the Showroom Manager of the Peloton Bethesda Row Retail Store, he lives, breathes and eats Prioritizing Physical Activity. Now that all gyms and fitness centers are closed, don’t you wish you had a Peloton?!?!

Check out his story!

How Intermittent Fasting Can Help You Ration Food During COVID-19

In July of 2019, facing some tough career decisions, I sought the guidance of the ALMIGHTY. I started fasting 12 hours a day and praying daily (early morning, noon and nighttime). During this period, I experienced so much clarity of my thoughts. My focus was laser-sharp. In concert with me Prioritizing Physical Activity, I also witnessed a decrease in body fat.  This was an added yet expected benefit. I continued the fast for about 40 days. I felt good. I ate the foods I craved during my eating window and never felt like I was sacrificing good tasting foods. More importantly, to the purpose of this short-term journey, the answers I sought were provided to me.

We are in Extra-ordinary times which call for creative ways to be vigilant with your resources and guard your health. Here is a way to do both.

WUHAN!!! Got You All In Check! | Gym Etiquette During COVID-19

As soon as the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) was identified as originating from Wuhan, a city in China, and constantly in news coverage…Busta Rhymes’s 1996 hit came to mind. This was arguably Busta Rhymes in his prime; both music career and physical shape.

If you show up to your fitness center, you are likely to notice a thinning of patrons. I can’t figure out whether this is due to the time change and losing an hour (I’m an early riser), or the mass panic surrounded around COVID-19 pandemic.

Is it COVID-19 or have your New Year’s Resolution gone OFF TRACK!?!?

If you’re not going to the gym out of an abundance of caution, don’t give up on Prioritizing Physical Activity unnecessarily. You Can Take Your Gym Membership and SHOVE IT! AND take your physical activity outdoors! No one will be breathing, coughing or sneezing on you, and if people get too close, YOU CAN RUN AWAY! (or briskly walk) 😊 Some things are just out of your control, and it is important to recognize it. Just as important is how you react to those circumstances that are out of your control.

Wipe down your equipment before you use it and after.

ACTIVE-DAD

In the same token, if you are in somewhat good health, don’t have any underlying conditions (heart disease, diabetes, lung disease), and not elderly (65 years or older), you are not at a high risk of getting seriously sick from COVID-19. But just because you are not likely to get “REALLY” sick, does not mean you won’t get sick. I don’t want to be sick AT ALL regardless of the severity!

Additionally, you can’t be an ACTIVE-DAD, unless you are first a dad. That means you have kids. Protecting them is always one of the highest priorities. You may not get hit hard by a virus, but they are likely to be impacted differently. I have a one-year old toddler. Although he’s a BIG healthy boy, the last thing I want is him to get sick.

Higher than normal stress levels are linked to getting sick. It is hard to be anxious if you physically exhausted from physical activity.

ACTIVE-DAD

The gym can be a place of close proximity with individuals, sharing of equipment, and sometimes fluids!

So, some precautions are warranted.
