Why “You can’t exercise your way out of a bad diet” is FALSE!

You may have heard the saying that “You can’t exercise your way out of a bad diet”. If you haven’t then you just did. Well I say that is bull crap! HOGWASH I tell you! Two is better than one, but one is better than none!

Two is better than one, but one is better than none!

For the everyday dad who does not have three to four hours a day to dedicate to physical activity, I totally get it and I get the intent. If you are eating like crap and exercising, you are not likely seeing the kinds of results you would see if you combined a plan for physical activity with an eating plan. I am totally guilty of this and I have identified a better eating plan for myself as something that needs improvement.

Even worse in my opinion, would be kicking butt on the physical activity front, and consuming all the calories you just burned off, PLUS some. So, not only would you fail in losing weight (if this is your goal), but you would fail at maintaining your weight. That is likely to have a discouraging effect and zap my motivation (Why am I getting fatter!?!? I’ve been working out!)

Compounding Effect of Diet and Physical Activity

If you eat good, you feel good, and likely to have the energy to engage in physical activity. I call this the “Compounding Effect of Diet and Physical Activity” (just made that up on my own, you read it here FIRST folks!).

HOWEVER!!! The inability to do both at the same time should not be an excuse do neither. Physical activity on its own still has health benefits. If you are crushing it in the eating realm and need to slowly implement a form of physical activity, or vice versa, that is fine too. I posit to you, which is easier, to form two habits at once, or one at a time? At the end of the day, it is all about forming habits. Start with the path of least resistance and build on it! You MUST start somewhere…SO START! And let me know how it’s going for you.
